Lancé en novembre 2004, le navigateur Firefox fait suite au navigateur Mozilla, qui disposait d’une messagerie électronique intégrée. La Mozilla Foundation est créée en juillet 2003 dans l’optique du lancement simultané de Firefox et d’une messagerie électronique indépendante du navigateur (Thunderbird). En novembre 2004, suite au succès de sa version bêta (8 millions de téléchargements en un mois), Firefox débute son ascension mondiale face au tout puissant Internet Explorer de Microsoft, grâce à de nouvelles fonctionnalités, par exemple la navigation par onglets, le blocage des pop-ups et l’intégration d’outils de recherche. Et grâce à l’importance accordée à la sécurité, à l’heure où les failles d’Internet Explorer se multiplient. En 2005, Firefox représente 10% du marché des navigateurs. En 2006, on note l’ajout de commandes permettant de rendre le web plus accessible aux personnes à mobilité réduite ou souffrant de déficiences visuelles, par exemple des commandes permettant de se servir du clavier plutôt que de la souris ou des commandes permettant d’agrandir le texte des pages web. En mars 2007, Firefox représente 25% du marché des navigateurs en Europe. -

Lancé par France Télécom en 1982, le minitel est un terminal permettant la consultation de serveurs à domicile moyennant finances, grâce à un accès par Télétel, le réseau vidéotex français. Cette consultation est fortement encouragée par l’Etat français, qui distribue gratuitement des millions de terminaux. L’opération minitel est un succès, contrairement à des opérations similaires menées dans d’autres pays (Prestel en Angleterre, BX en Allemagne et Alex au Canada) qui, elles, ne remportent pas le succès escompté. A la fin des années 1990, on compte 6 millions de minitels et 20.000 services actifs. Lorsque l’utilisation du web se généralise, de nombreux serveurs minitel sont consultables sur le web ou sont remplacés par des serveurs web, avec les avantages qu’offrent une consultation meilleur marché, une plus grande facilité de navigation et l’ajout de fonctions multimédias. Lancé en 2001, le format MP3pro est un format de compression audio (son, musique, voix) issu du format MP3. Il offre une meilleure qualité sonore et une compression de fichier supérieure au MP3, avec une vitesse d’encodage de 64 Kbps (kilobits par seconde), deux fois moindre que le MP3 (encodage à 128 Kbps). La taille des fichiers se trouvant nettement diminuée, il est possible de stocker davantage de morceaux de musique sur un support donné, par exemple un baladeur numérique. Le MP3pro est développé à l’origine par Coding Technologies dans le cadre de la technologie SBR (spectral band recognition), destinée à un appareil auditif pour les personnes sourdes. Le développement se poursuit ensuite en collaboration avec les sociétés Thomson et Fraunhofer IIS. -

Lancé en août 2003 par Niklas Zennström et Janus Friis, Skype est un service gratuit de téléphonie sur l’internet. Pionnier de la téléphonie sur IP (internet protocol), Skype signe les débuts d’une nouvelle ère, celle de la téléphonie internet simple et gratuite. Conçu par la même équipe et selon le même principe que Kazaa, le très populaire logiciel d’échange de fichiers musicaux, Skype est un logiciel permettant de téléphoner gratuitement en mode P2P (peer-to-peer) à toute personne utilisant le même logiciel. Le succès est au rendez-vous. En janvier 2005, Skype est utilisé par près de 30 millions de personnes, avec 140.000 téléchargements par jour. Le logiciel est disponible pour les plateformes Windows, Mac et Linux. Les abonnés peuvent passer des appels vers des téléphones portables ou fixes, par le biais du service payant SkypeOut, à des prix défiant toute concurrence. En avril 2005, pour un prix modique, on peut également avoir un numéro de téléphone "classique" (SkypeIn) et une messagerie vocale (Skype Voicemail). Deux services inaugurés pour fêter les 100 millions de téléchargements du logiciel. Le début de la fin, donc, pour la téléphonie à un prix prohibitif. Fin 2005, Skype est racheté par eBay, géant du commerce en ligne, pour 2,6 milliards de dollars US, et poursuit son expansion avec l’introduction de nouveaux services. En décembre 2006, Skype compte à son actif 4,4% des appels internationaux à l’échelle mondiale.
